Overview

The goal of this article is to present high-level curricula for training courses.

...

example training courses for the Inventory Management System. Each course description represents a course that has been presented to one or more clients. Typically these are used as a starting point when designing courses during the the roll-out phase of a new implementation. The suggest possible topics, audiences, materials and prerequisites. It is possible to design hybrid courses based on your organization’s needs. For example, a 1.5 day training might include the content from the Basic Data Collection Course, and a few of the topics of the Advanced Data Collection Course for the full audience on day one, followed by a half day in which Administrators Course is presented to a small subset of participants.

Basic Data Collection Course

Goal: The goal of the basic course is to train a forester in the basic workflow of designing, implementing, reviewing and analyzing exporting data for a simple timber cruise. It assumes that follows the high-level workflow that is typically presented in demos and presentations of the the system:

...

Audience: Field foresters who will use MobileMap to cruise timber. No GIS or specific mobile device experience is needed.

...

Duration: 2-6 hours, depending on whether data collection will occur outside or in office, the complexity of the data collection, the number of supported cruise specs or workflows, etc.

Prerequisites:

  • MobileMap and InventoryManager have been configured

  • Settings and business logic have been configured

  • Data model has been published and shared with users

  • Participants have their ArcGIS credentials and have verified access to the feature service

  • Participants have a mobile device (minimum of one device per 3 participants) with MobileMap installed, licensed and a suitable base map downloaded, and a Wi-Fi connection

  • Participants have access to a laptop or PC (minimum of one computer per 3 participants) and a Wi-Fi connection

...

  • Design

    • Importing source stands from a zipped Shapefile

    • Copy of Source Stand to Stand

    • Plot layout

  • Collect

    • Download to MobileMap

    • Navigate to plot(s)

    • Collect tree data

    • Upload data

  • Review

    • Review data in InventoryManager

    • Export data to Excel

Advanced Data Collection Course

Goal: The goal of the advanced course is to build on the basic training and add more advanced topics focused on alternative workflows, more advanced spatial data creation and editing, 3rd party analysis applications, etc.

Audience: Same as basic course

...

Duration: 2-6 hours, depending on specific materials topics to be covered

Prerequisites:

...

  • Design

    • InventoryManager

      • Heads up digitize Source Stands

      • Edit Stands: vertex editing, split, merge/explode, bulk delete

    • MobileMap (alternative workflow - field based cruise design)

      • Heads up digitize Source Stands

      • Edit Stands: vertex editing, split, truncate, expand, append

      • Plot layout in the field

  • Collect

    • Download parameters

    • GPS data collection

...

    • for stand delineation, plot update, GPS tracking

    • Stand summary

    • Double sampling (FTN, STR, Big BAF, etc.)

    • Configurable defaults

    • Driving directions

  • Base map download in MobileMap

Data Analysis Course (Compilation and Reporting)

Goal: The goal of the Data Analysis Course is to train foresters and data managers to utilize InventoryManager to support the selected compilation and reporting system(s) for their implementation. This includes implementations that support in-app compilation and reporting (NVEL-based) as well as 3rd party integrations (TCruise, FVS, FPS, Silvah, LRM, etc.)

Audience: Data managers and/or GIS analysts

Format: Typically web-based

Duration: 2-4 hours, depending on topics to be covered and the depth at which they are addressed

Prerequisites:

  • Same materials (device, laptop, ArcGIS credentials, Wi-Fi, etc.) as basic course. Mobile devices may not be needed for this course but all users should have access to a PC.

  • Participants should have relevant 3rd party applications (e.g., TCruise) installed, licenses and with any required data, templates or other files.

  • Completion of basic course highly recommended

Topics:

  • TBD, but may include:

    • Compilation process, merch specs, log rules, etc.

    • In-app reports, saving to PDF and other systems (ArcGIS, LRM)

    • 3rd Party apps

      • TCruise

      • FVS

      • FPS

      • SILVAH

      • LRM

Administrators Course

Goal: The goal of the administrators course is to train data managers and GIS analysts to implement the back-end services (Feature Services), business logic, settings, etc.

Audience: Data managers and/or GIS analysts

Format: Typically web-based

Duration: 2-4 hours, depending on specific materials to be covered

Prerequisites:

  • Same materials (device, laptop, ArcGIS credentials, Wi-Fi, etc.) as basic course. Mobile devices may not be needed for this course but all users should have access to a PC.

  • Participants should have ArcGIS Pro installed on their PC

  • ArcGIS credentials should have sufficient privileges to publish services

  • Completion of basic course recommended

Topics:

  • Back-end services
